Daisuke Jigen — MANGA POT
“Conceptually Unstable.” Series
The vocabulary of this piece is complete and exhaustive: three bullet exit points, one black cylindrical form, a quantity of spent brass casings, and a dark violet base.
On one face of the matte black cylinder, three entry impacts document the force of penetration at the moment of contact. On the opposite face, three .357 Magnum rounds remain at the instant of exit — each followed by a short mass of displaced material, frozen mid-flight. The spatial interval between entry and exit is the diameter of the vase. The temporal interval is 0.3 seconds. That is Daisuke Jigen’s draw time, recorded across the Lupin III franchise as the measure of his precision.
Spent casings accumulate at the base in an informal pile. Three live rounds stand upright among them on a dark violet surface. The violet is not a decorative decision. In almost every series and film, Jigen removes his fedora on two occasions only: mourning and formal ceremony. His hat is his most prized possession after his Smith & Wesson Model 19. Neither hat nor living character appear in this piece. The violet names their absence.
The piece poses a formal problem that mirrors the character’s method: a bullet in flight cannot be observed. What the object presents is evidence — reconstructed after the fact from entry, from exit, from what accumulates at the base.
